Parks and Recreation

With more than eight miles of shoreline and 1000 acres of open space set aside for public use, Fairfield has a lot to offer.

Along the coast of Long Island Sound you'll find four public beaches, a marina, boat basins, sailboat storage and mooring and docking facilities. There's fresh water recreation on Lake Mohegan, too.

Town parks offer plenty of activities: fishing, camping, hiking, swimming, boating, picnicking, skating and cross-country skiing.

Fairfield also features six golf courses, both public and private, along with five year-round clay tennis courts and dozens of asphalt courts at parks and schools.

For information about recreation programs offered by the town, see the Parks and Recreation Department web site.

Transportation

Wherever you need to go, you can get there from Fairfield. Easy access to I-95 and the Merritt Parkway puts all of Connecticut's towns and cities within reach. Hartford, the state capital, is just 51 miles away. And if you're travelling out of state, you have plenty of options:

  • By Air: Fairfield is just 61 miles from Bradley International, less than 50 from JFK and LaGuardia and about 20 minutes from Sikorsky Memorial Airport. Don't feel like driving there yourself? Connecticut Limo's Bridgeport terminal is just minutes away from Fairfield Center.

  • By Ferry: It's only a ten minute ride to the Bridgeport terminal of the Port Jefferson ferry serving Long Island.

  • By Rail: The Metro-North Railroad will take you to New York City's Grand Central Terminal, about 50 miles from Fairfield. There are two train stations in Fairfield, with a third one on the way. Amtrak serves the entire Northeast Corridor from Boston to Washinton, D.C., with stops in nearby Bridgeport.

Within Connecticut, Metro-North serves more than a dozen shoreline communities from Greenwich to New Haven, with connections to Waterbury, Danbury, the Shoreline East commuter railroad and Amtrak trains running north to Hartford and Springfield, MA.

MetroPool is a source of information on carpools, vanpools and other commuter options. Local bus service is provided by the Greater Bridgeport Transit Authority.

Schools and Libraries

Public Schools: The Fairfield Public School System serves almost 8,000 students from pre-kindergarten through high school. The school system provides a quality education and is considered one of the best in Connecticut. The town is currently building a second high school as well as a new middle and elementary school. This brings the total number of schools to 16.

Private Schools: See the town's web site for a detailed list of private and parochial schools in Fairfield.

Higher Education: There are no less than two private universities within Fairfield's borders -- Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University -- with more than 11,000 students between them.

Libraries: Fairfield can boast three libraries with extensive book collections and active cultural calendars. The Fairfield Public Library includes the Main Library on the Old Post Road and its Fairfield Woods branch. Southport's independent Pequot Library shares a computer system with the Fairfield Public Library.
