Passing the Torch
Regina Madwed of Capitol Photo.Interactive has stepped into the mighty shoes of Greg Beno, the Chamber's original semi-unofficial event photographer extraordinaire. Regina came armed and ready to the Annual Meeting & Awards Reception, June 11 at the Brooklawn Country Club, and we here at ChamberWorks are proud to present her debut performance to our loyal readers.
She's got lots and lots o' pictures — lots! — and they're all wrapped up in the traditional dotPhoto slide show for your enjoyment. Regina's taking her role as the New Greg Beno very seriously indeed.
See the table decorations created specially for the event by some of our members, and the official passing of the gavel from Kevin Lally to incoming board chairman Jason Hyde. Plus plenty of people simply enjoying themselves — and it's only appropriate that she got some pictures of the "Old" Greg Beno himself. Watch closely and you might spot the Chamber's own Patricia Ritchie caught with food in her hand; we're willing to bet it's not in her diet plan. Bad, bad Patricia.
Stay tuned for our next networking event, the June Business After Hours at Patriot National Bank's Post Road branch. We hope to see you there, but if you can't make it, be sure to check out Regina's photos — which you'll only find here at ChamberWorks.
Do You Belong in Connecticut? We Think So
We get a lot of questions from people who are looking to start a business here, and www.YouBelongInCT.com has answers to those questions and more.
Managed by the Dept. of Economic and Community Development with involvement from CERC, Connecticut Innovations and the Connecticut Development Authority, the site is built on the premise that "this state offers what we believe is the nation's best quality of life and most nurturing business environment." Inside you'll find information to support that claim.
The site has resources for both employers (everything from tax credits to workforce data) and their employees (who will no doubt have a keen interest in Connecticut's schools, town-by-town demographics and even our climate). There are also links to the state's tourism web site, www.CTvisit.com. All in all, a good place to start for anyone looking to live and/or do business in the state.
Chamber Webmaster Kidnapped, Board Yawns
New Web Site Unveiled After Hostage's Release
Tongue surgically implanted in cheek, a staff writer with too much time on his hands announces the launch of the all-new Chamber web site. — Ed.
Militant cattle kidnapped the Fairfield Chamber's webmaster in a brazen daylight attack Monday morning. After a brief discussion, the Chamber's board of directors agreed that hiring a new webmaster would be cheaper than paying the ransom.
That consensus changed abruptly when the cows demonstrated that they were also in possession of the hostage's laptop, which contained the only known copy of the newly redesigned Chamber web site.
After another hastily assembled meeting at Joe's American Bar & Grill, the board unanimously approved payment for the return of the laptop, though at a substantially reduced price.
"Ransom demands aren't exactly in the budget," one board member said.
The cows, satisfied with the good-faith gesture, released the laptop and tossed in the captive webmaster as a bonus.
The cows' original ransom demand and the payment they ultimately accepted have not been disclosed. Sources say the final figure was in the low single digits, but a keg of beer may have been included in the deal as well.
Visibly bruised by his experience, the Chamber webmaster (who asked that his name be withheld) pointed out at a press conference that the web site files were already loaded onto the Chamber's server, and that activating the site would involve little more than flipping a switch. He suggested somewhat darkly that the board should consider the ransom payment a bargain price for his release. He then proceeded to turn on the new web site, and left to find a bar.
When reached for comment, the cows' spokesperson would say only "Moo."
Update: For those who think it could never happen, I give you this.

May Business After Hours Held on Expected Day
Despite an attempt by inept Nigerian internet scammers to confuse our members with an email suggesting that the May Business After Hours had actually happened in April, the event went off without a hitch on the scheduled date, May 28 at The Flying Dish.
As eager as Flying Dish owner Matarr Sajaw was to show off the outdoor patio, our members didn't stray far from the food and beverage tables inside the restaurant, which was a pleasant enough networking environment in itself. (And people wonder why Business After Hours events at restaurants are so popular.) All in all, another gratifying night on the town.
June 25 brings us to Patriot National Bank's Post Road office (no word on whether the Southport branch's Lucky Shopper Bowl will make an appearance), and on July 10 we unleash the mother of all networking events, the Second Annual Penfield Beach Bash. Mark those dates — and don't let some two-bit email criminal tell you otherwise.
High Visibility
With fantastic weather down by the harbor, the annual Visual Improvement Awards were visible even before the formal presentations began, as attendees mingled outside Nicholas H. Fingelly Real Estate.
Since 1971, the Chamber has been acting with Fingelly Real Estate to honor the people who put in the extra effort to make Fairfield's business look, well, more fair. It was the late Nicholas Fingelly himself who invented the idea — that it's just as important to make Fairfield a nicer place to work and shop as it is to live in. Peter Ventriglia of Landmark Financial Group is the third partner in this program, photographing the buildings and working with Fingelly and the Chamber to select the winners.
Regina Madwed of Capitol Photo.Interactive retouched the photos, which were then framed and matted by Fairfield Gallery & Frame. These photos themselves are the awards that are presented each spring.
This year Al and Ken Kleban were all over the joint, with two First Prize wins and two more runner-up awards, and we had a bumper crop of new construction. These are the buildings and the people that won us over:
