$13 Million Grant for Math, Science in Connecticut
The National Math and Science Initiative has awarded a six-year, $13.2 million grant to the state of Connecticut and the Connecticut Business and Industry Association (CBIA) Education Foundation.
The grant covers teacher training and financial incentives for high school students taking Advanced Placement and pre-AP courses in math and science. NMSI is a non-profit education organization supported by ExxonMobil, with additional funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.
Connecticut was one of only seven states selected for the first round of NMSI funding, a program that is hoped to extend to 150 school districts in 20 states over the next five years. The CBIA Education Foundation will administer the grant in cooperation with its supporting partners, the Connecticut State Department of Education, the Connecticut Department of Higher Education, the Connecticut Academy for Education in Mathematics, Science and Technology, and the Connecticut Science Center.
Hey! Hey! It's Time for a Harvest Happening
Harvest time is a-comin', and that's all the excuse we need to throw a Harvest Happening. This particular happening happens Oct. 19 at the Grange Hall for that added touch of authenticity. We'll have live bluegrass music, a country dinner prepared by The Flying Dish, a homemade pie competition and a silent auction, too.
We'll also be holding a live auction of a pair of "his 'n hers" scooters -- valued at $3,600 -- from OYM Motors. Several members have already expressed interest, with intimations of violence if they lose -- so that should be entertaining in and of itself.
We're looking for silent auction items worth $50 or more (livestock not recommended). Contact us at 255-1011 to help us make this happening even more happenin'.
And in the meantime, mosey on over to the online registration page to reserve your seat at the dinner table, 'cause we can only squeeze so many folks in there -- if we have to hogtie everyone and stack them up like hay bales, dancing could be difficult.

Business After Hours Season Resumes
Now that y'all have had a month off to recover from the outrageously fun Penfield Beach Bash, the month of September brings us another epic Business After Hours, Sept. 19 at Sequence Financial.
Be there, or else. You'd don't want us to send a pack of drunken ferrets to fetch you.
Speaking of Penfield...
...we've already booked the Penfield II Pavilion for next year's event on July 10, 2008. Just thought you might want to know.
