Designer Tables for an Annual Gathering

The ChamberWorks staff has been shanghaied for other office duties this week, but we wanted to show you these photos of the tables decorated by our members for the Annual Meeting and Awards Reception on June 6.

We thank Commerce Bank, Fairfield Interiors and Ruth Ridgeway Designs, Opticare, Patriot National Bank, Shaklee Products, Troy Art & Framing, Ultimate Organizers and The Watermark at 3030 Park for their creative sponsorship -- and for brightening up our event, which was a big success (more on that to come).

Fairfield, the Bluefish and Saving Lives

The Fairfield Rotary Club is raising money to put automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in public places throughout Fairfield, and their game plan includes the Fairfield business community.

June 13 is Fairfield Family Night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, home of the Bridgeport Bluefish, and 50% of the proceeds will go to the Rotary Club's AED purchase program. As an organization of business people, Rotary is hoping that Fairfield businesses will see this as a great opportunity to treat their employees to a fun, inexpensive night at the ballpark and also help pay for life-saving equipment; the AED you fund today could someday save the life of any one of us.

And if that's not reason enough, remember that Wednesday is $1 night -- hot dogs and soda are just a buck each. Plus, you get to watch the Bluefish stare down the Long Island Ducks.

(Long Island "Ducks"? Please. Bluefish are voracious predators, the piranhas of the seas. Ducks don't even have teeth.)

For further information, contact Kathi Eigenrauch at Commerce Bank, 203-767-8753.

Remembering Ed Gleason

Fairfield businessman Edward M. Gleason died peacefully on Saturday, June 2 at St. Vincent's Medical Center. He was 70 years old.

We will always remember Ed as a longtime and active member of the Fairfield Chamber. In general Ed was a big part of the Fairfield business community, particularly the banking industry, and will be missed by many, many people.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Fairfield Rotary Foundation (PO Box 411, Fairfield, CT 06824) or St. Vincent's Swim Across the Sound, and legacy.com hosts an online guest book where you can share your memories of Ed.

Hitting the High Water Mark

The Watermark at 3030 Park had been waiting to host a Business After Hours for almost a year now, and when their turn came on May 30, they were well prepared for the 70 or so people who came to do some networking and schmoozing.

Food prepared by their in-house chef was arranged in the center of a spacious atrium to allow folks to circulate freely. Accompanied by live piano music, our attendees sipped multicolored martinis as they mingled and chatted and tried to do a little business in these comfortable surroundings.

Naturally there were tours of the independent living community, and as impressive as it is now, the $20 million renovation now underway will add 13 new cottages and 33 new luxury apartments in addition to upgrading existing facilities.

For an event that ostensibly ended at seven o'clock, we had many people lingering well past eight -- always a sign of a good Business After Hours. Greg Beno has captured it all in an epic dotPhoto slideshow -- be sure to check it out, whether you're curious about what you missed or wondering if you had your eyes closed when the shutter clicked.

And get ready for another gangbusters networking event on June 27, just a couple of miles up the road at Sacred Heart's Edgerton Center for the Arts. We'll see you there.

Did We Say 'May Ball'? Make that the JUNE Ball!

The merry month of May has passed us by until next year, but that's no obstacle for the Chamber's imaginary May Ball. Call it the June Ball, the Summer Ball, the bowling ball that never stops rolling -- have no fear, because you have not missed this golden opportunity to support the Chamber with a few bucks.

Whether you decide to fill in the form on that classy invitation we sent you or make your "reservations" online, it's fast, it's easy, and you don't have to dress up (but please do put something on to avoid scandalizing the neighbors). Feel free to enjoy a quiet meal at home or at the restaurant of your choice, because there are no rubber chickens, no bouncing beefsteaks, no funky fish flapping on your plate at this non-event event ... unless you're into that sort of thing, in which case do go right ahead.

Your donation supports the Chamber's marketing programs directly, with nothing spent on renting a dining hall for the evening. It's a phantom shindig with a concrete purpose: building a bigger and brighter Fairfield business community today, tomorrow and in years to come.

And that's why our May/June/Whatever Ball will still be waltzing its way into your heart in 2017, when we celebrate its 10th anniversary. Quietly and in the privacy of our own homes, of course.
