Closing the Curtain on Another Year

The Chamber's annual Holiday Reception -- you could call it "Business and Charity After Hours" -- continued a string of blockbuster networking and food events. Food, food, food.

Caterer Along Came Carol followed up her performance at the September Business After Hours with filet mignon, roast pork, pot stickers, mounds of fresh fruit, a bartender and the customary retinue of food people.

Hosted by Patriot National Bank, the evening proved highly conducive to mingling, chatting, schmoozing and munching with almost 90 people in attendance. There were goodie bags filled with the harbingers of the season -- chocolate and ice scrapers -- and door prizes for two lucky winners (whispered to be Abraham Yale and Andy Aziz of Payzone). As always, the sign of a truly successful event is how many people were lingering well past the official end of the evening.

But the Holiday Reception is not your standard Business After Hours, because this is the event where we collect donations for Operation Hope, at a time of year when people are most in need. In addition to a busload of donated items, Op Hope welcomed cash donations from our members and $400 from the evening's proceeds. If you missed the event and haven't made a donation recently, they will gladly accept your generosity any time of year.

Capturing this display of holiday spirit was Greg Beno of Adecco and his notorious digital camera. Be sure to catch his slideshow spectacular at dotPhoto. One of our members might benefit from some forewarning before he watches the show, but that would take all the fun out of it, so we won't do that.

A big gloopy "Happy Holidays" to our members and to all the people who live, work and shop in Fairfield. We've enjoyed your company throughout this past year, and hope to see some familiar faces at the Seagrape Inn on Jan. 17 for our first networking event of 2007. And don't forget that the deadline for The $110 Business After Hours Package Deal is coming up fast.

Fairfield T-shirts Going Fast

Our ever-popular Fairfield T-shirts have sold so well that we're completely out of adult sizes and only have a few children's shirts left.

We'll be getting more shirts in early 2007 to meet the demand, but if you see crowds of people camping outside our office in the meantime (pitchforks and flaming torches optional), you'll know why.

While you're waiting, we do have navy and red hats in stock, so all is not lost if you're looking for that perfectly Fairfield gift. And don't forget that we also have Fairfield Gift Certificates for sale, redeemable at dozens of merchants. We got ya covered.

Rally Against Gridlock Jan. 10 in Hartford

Jill Kelly and Carol Leighton will once again lead the call for a solution to gridlock in Connecticut. On Jan. 10 they'll depart from Westport with a busload of business leaders and concerned citizens, bound for a meeting with Governor Rell and key legislators.

The Chamber is looking for someone to represent Fairfield's business community at this meeting -- someone who can put into words the daily frustrations we all experience on I-95, the Merritt Parkway, connecting highways and Fairfield's major thoroughfares.

The Connecticut Citizens Transportation Lobby is focused on better transit and improved rail freight systems to get people to work and take trucks off the roads. At this meeting the group will be pressing our state leaders to embrace "responsible growth," which involves expanded train and bus schedules and increased use of rail freight.

The meeting happens 10:30 am on Wednesday, Jan. 10 in Room 2B of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. The bus will be leaving Westport at 8:15 am, with a stop in New Haven along the way. The round trip fare is $20 per person, and you can reserve a seat by e-mail at kgraves@optonline.com or call Kitty Graves at 227-0506.
