A Few Good Whacks with a Club

The Golf Club at Oxford Greens welcomed fellow Chamber members -- and other area folks who wanted to swing a club at something -- to play a full round of golf at a great price, golf carts included. (After a good clubbing, you want to run it over a few times to finish the job.) It was a sell-out event on an October Sunday that began beautifully, and no one seemed to mind when it turned cloudy and cooler in the afternoon.

This was a chance for the club to show off its two-year-old course to the people down here, and for our intrepid golfers to display their skills on the fairways. No word on who was more successful -- the course or our players -- but reports of violence were relatively minor.

When the last foursome finished their game at 6 pm, it was time to hoist a brew and chow down on some hot hors d'oeuvres at the clubhouse with golf pro Steve Keating. The day was a big hit with everyone (that "thwack!" you heard didn't necessarily involve a golf ball), and already there's talk of doing it again next year. Preferably with bigger clubs and more victims.

Food, Food and a Business After Hours. With Food

Was Merrill Lynch trying to one-up last month's Business After Hours at Fairfield County Bank?

The catering by Vino on the Brick Walk was ... huge. They were passing out doggie bags at the end, there was so much food. And the wine simply overflowed. Even with a good 80 people in attendance, we were vastly outnumbered by the food and drink.

Beverly Balaz and the Chamber's newest staff person, Ericka Rojas, were checking people in at the door. (Linda picked the wrong week to go on vacation -- she missed out on all that food.) It was a lively bunch, undampened by the rain pouring down outside. The ample parking on the upper deck must have helped.

Did we mention the food? Oh, yeah.

Anyway, a big thanks to our hosts for putting on such a wildly successful event. And of course, we have Greg Beno's latest dotPhoto slideshow spectacular for your entertainment.

Next month's big networking event is the Double-Chamber Business After Hours and Expo at the Westport Inn. It's a joint production of the Fairfield and Westport chambers, and it's been a big hit for two years running. Hope to see you there.
