Sixty Years, Great Time Had by All
With Fairfield University's Rev. Charles Allen as emcee, the Chamber capped its 60th Anniversary festivities at the Annual Dinner June 7.
The Board of Directors met (very) briefly to get some dull stuff out of the way, finishing in record time. Sean Kilbride of A.G. Edwards takes over the Chairman's job for the new fiscal year, and a batch of new directors were dragged in kicking and screaming.
The rest of the evening was given over to more interesting items of interest. Guest speaker Brian O'Gara, senior director of special events for Major League Baseball, had fun stories to tell from his 17 years with the organization, and the 2006 Harold B. Harris Award went to Jean Ames Sturges for her decades of community and political service to Fairfield. Greg Beno of Addeco Employment received the Chairman's Award, a few lucky people won door prizes, pianist John Shalvoy hit the right notes, and Father Allen kept everything moving right along.
The Brooklawn Country Club staff gave an impressive performance of their own with dinner plates and bar glasses, and flowers donated by Hansen's Flower Shop and Dailey's Flower Shop brightened every table. Many were heard to say that we must return to Brooklawn for next year's dinner, whether they will have us back or not.
The Chamber would like to thank the evening's sponsor, Patriot National Bank, and those who donated door prizes -- The Kitchen Corner, The Chocolate Shoppe, Fairfield Gallery & Frame and Nest of Southport -- and everyone who joined us in one last hurrah for the Chamber's 60 years. With that out of the way, we can get started on the next 60.
But not until we've finished our nap.
A Splendid Do at Salon V
Michelle Varrone and the staff at Salon V put on an excellent Business After Hours event May 31, going above and beyond to welcome the 65-70 people who attended. Flowers and greenery, goodie bags for everyone -- even Michelle's parents were on hand to greet people at the door.
The food, provided by Vino on the Brick Walk, was wonderful. And the creative use of sinks as ice buckets was a neat touch. All in all, the suroundings made for a great networking event, as you can see in Greg Beno's slideshow.
Showcasing Business-to-Business
Last month's Business Showcase 2006 drew a good 2,000 people and 200 exhibitors to Sacred Heart University for a day of business-to-business one-on-one, engaging seminars and great food from around the region.
Keynote speaker Stew Leonard, Jr. kicked off the event with stories about growing up as milkman's son and a dairy store that ballooned into a $300 million family business. He was selling autographed copies of his cookbook, with revenues going to the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation begun in memory of his son.
