Bravo for the October Business After Hours

![]()

The Constand family played host Oct. 12 for a business after hours in Bravo's newly renovated upstairs lounge area. Tastefully done in tones of red and black, the room has an entirely different aura than before.
The generous spread included several kinds of pasta dishes and a wonderful tossed salad and Italian bread. Bruschetta hors d'oeuvres made the rounds, and for liquid refreshments we had red and white wines along with some non-alchoholic beverages. Sheryl Constand even made her own delicious cookies and brownies. Yummy!
The event drew a crowd of about 55 people despite the pouring rain (hey -- when did it not rain that week?), and a good time was had by all.
Starry-eyed Sponsors Sought for February Event
Let us put your name in lights for Twinkle, Twinkle Fairfield Star -- and we won't even make you get up and sing.
The following sponsorships are available for the Feb. 16 event:
| Sun (1 only) | $1,000 | ||
| Moon (1 only) | $750 | ||
| North Star (1 only) | $500 | ||
| Shooting Stars (unlimited available) | $250 |
Sponsor names will appear on all media information, including all press releases, fliers, Save the Date cards, paid newspaper advertising, and signage at the club on the night of the event. Approximately 165 people are expected to attend.
Wine and beer will be provided by Harry's Wine & Liquor Store. Ticket price is $45 prepaid ($50 at the door). Income from the event will be used to market the town merchants, the gift certificate program, and the Town of Fairfield as a great place to live, work and do business.
Use Your Head, Not Your Hands
A friendly reminder for our members, and anyone else who drives in Connecticut: new restrictions on cell phone use behind the wheel went into effect on October 1, 2005.
People 18 years and older need hands-free accessories (headsets, speakerphones) to use a cell phone while driving. Anyone under 18 years of age is prohibited from using a cell phone while driving, hands-free or not.
Exceptions are made for emergency calls to 911, hospitals, physicians' offices, ambulance companies and police or fire departments, for drivers of any age. And peace officers, ambulance drivers and firefighters over age 18 are permitted to use hand-held phones on the road.
It should be noted that the law covers more than just cell phones. "Mobile electronic devices" in general -- PDAs, laptops, videogame machines, hand-held DVD players, pagers, camera phones and the like -- are verboten for anyone driving Connecticut's roads.
Built-in audio and navigational equipment aren't included in that definition of mobile electronic devices, and the law makes no mention of sandwiches, newspapers, hair curlers, hysterical pets or any number of other potential distractions. But a little common sense will tell you that navigating this state is tricky enough without turning your car into an office on wheels. Slap on that headset, buckle up, and keep the rest of your beeping, blinking and blooping electronic toys tucked away until you get to your destination.
This has been a public service announcement of your Chamber of Commerce.
Exporting Something?
Periodically we get calls and emails asking for information on exporting goods outside the U.S. Although we provide Certificates of Origin as a free service to our members (and offer them to non-members for a fee), export questions are generally outside our purview. But recently we've learned of two resources for export information and assistance.
The Connecticut District Export Council, in association with several other organizations and government agencies, is presenting a seminar, "Calling All Exporters," on Oct. 26 in Middletown. The focus is on learning how to prepare and process export and shipping documentation. The cost is $35. For more information, call 860-638-6950 or visit the DEC's web site.
The DEC is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Commerce's Export Assistance Center, which informs us that Foreign Service Officer Jonathan Marks has joined their office. Working with the commerce offices in embassies and consulates around the world, he's described as the main point of contact for Fairfield County businesses looking to expand their overseas sales:
You are invited to call, email or visit Jonathan anytime to discuss your exporting requirements. He would welcome the opportunity to visit you as well. At your convenience, please take a look at our web site, which describes the U.S. Commercial Service programs which Jonathan can use to help you increase your overseas sales.
