Economic Assistance Offered to Manufacturers

If you are a manufacturer and have experienced sales and employment declines in the last 12 months due to increased imports, you may be eligible for assistance under the Trade Adjustment Assistance program for manufacturers. The New England Trade Adjustment Assistance Center, Inc. (NETAAC) administers this program for the U.S. Department of Commerce in the New England states. The assistance takes the form of grants. If you wish more information, contact NETAAC in Boston at 978-446-9870 or e-mail info@netaac.org. The go-to website is www.netaac.org.

Restaurant Owners' Voices Needed

The Connecticut Restaurant Association is asking restaurant owners to speak up about new regulations drafted by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The regulations call for upgraded grease pretreatment equipment at all Class III and IV food establishments. While the CRA agrees that reducing the amount of fats, oils and grease ("FOG") in the public sewer system is a worthwhile goal, the organization believes that the regulations as drafted would place an undue burden on the state's restaurants, hotels, bars, schools, churches and clubs -- in short, any organization that prepares food for the public.

Objections to the plan include the high cost of the equipment, short time frame for compliance, limited number of disposal facilities, high record-keeping requirements and insufficient consideration of the alternatives.

The CRA asks restaurant owners to relay their concerns to:

Lisa Moody, Governor's Chief of Staff
860-566-4840, Lisa.Moody@po.state.ct.us

Sen. Andrea Stillman, Environment Committee Chair
1-800-842-1420, Stillman@senatedems.ct.gov

Sen. Edward Meyer, Environment Committee Vice Chair
860-240-0527, Meyer@senatedems.ct.gov

Sen. Jonathan Harris, Regulation Review Committee Chair
860-240-0558, Harris@senatedems.ct.gov

Sen. Christopher Murphy, Environment Committee member
860-240-0567, Murphy@senatedems.ct.gov

and all local legislators. Sen. John McKinney, who represents Fairfield, is a ranking member of the Environment Committee. He can be reached at 860-240-0441, John.McKinney@cga.ct.gov.

Things Happening Behind the Scenes

We're in the process of moving to a new database system here in the Chamber office, which means that updates to the web site may take longer than usual.

The new system will make it easier for us to maintain our membership records, part of the Chamber's ongoing technology improvement efforts. We've locked Randall in a closet until he gets the job done, so please bear with us.
