Quiz the Candidates on Transportation Issues
The League of Women Voters hosts a forum for Fairfield's state Senate and House candidates October 18. It's a prime opportunity to to let them know about our transportation concerns.
The Connecticut Citizens Transportation Lobby suggests the following questions for the candidates:
Gateway user fees have been proposed to finance a mass transit improvements fund. These would include high-speed "ez pass" lanes and scales to set appropriate tolls for trucks and identify those that are overweight, stationed where the three interstates and the Merritt Parkway enter Connecticut. Would you support this proposal?
Do you support changing existing legislation to permit the use of cameras for speed limit enforcement? Would you sponsor such a bill?
Do you support the expanded use of rail freight and barges to get some of the trucks off our highways? Do you support the Cross Harbor Project which would build a freight tunnel under the Hudson River?
How would you finance the purchase of new rail cars?
Do you support an increase in the fuel tax to finance a mass transit improvement fund?
Do you have any other suggestions to finance mass transit improvements?
The event happens at 7:30 pm at the Department of Education offices, 501 Kings Highway East, Suite 210 in Fairfield.
Two Chambers Launch New Business-to-Business Event
The Fairfield and Westport/Weston chambers of commerce are teaming up to host a new table-top business expo and networking event October 4. The event runs 4:30 to 7:30 pm in the Atrium Room of the Westport Inn, 1595 Post Road East in Westport.
There are still some spots open for exhibitors, but space is limited. Tables are $100 for 30 in. by 6 ft. and $75 for 18 in. by 6 ft. Electricity is $25 but is extremely limited and will be dispensed on a first-come, first-served basis. Free wireless internet access is provided; if needed, wireless hardware is available for $10. Businesses are limited to two company representatives per table.
The expo will include a business after hours networking opportunity, with cash bar and hot & cold hors d'oeuvres provided by Tartaglia's Restaurant.

Chamber Staff to Greet Fairfield University Freshmen

When Fairfield University welcomes the Class of 2008 on Sunday, Sept. 5, the Chamber will be there. As in past years, we'll be manning a table in the Barone Campus Center's Oak Room to hand out information about local businesses and answer any questions that students (or their parents) may have about the business community.
Students and parents will get copies of the Shopping, Dining and Entertainment Guide and the Fairfield map, info on Chamber members offering student discounts, a list of Gift Certificate Program participants and more. We'll also be giving the new students carabiner key chains with the Chamber's logo.
This is how we introduce freshmen to the town beyond campus -- and to the resources our members have to offer them.
Looking Ahead: Santa's Arrival is Nov. 27
Summer isn't quite over yet, but already the Chamber is gearing up for Santa's Arrival in November. As always, we need help: blowing up balloons, selling T-shirts, assisting with the horse and buggy rides, putting up and taking down the Chamber tent. (If we have the volunteers, we'll dress someone up as Rudolf or a snowman.) All we ask is two hours of your time. And sponsors! We need some members to step up and lend their names to the event.
This ever-popular holiday happening is a great chance to renew ties with the community, so mark your calendars and be ready to help us bring Santa back to Fairfield.
Getting an Early Start on the 2005 Business Guide
The Chamber is on track to publish next year's Business Guide in mid-January, so you'll be hearing from MKDesign shortly about advertising in the guide.
If you haven't reviewed your listing in the current guide, please do so now and send us any corrections. An update form was included in the August mailing for your convenience.
Update: We've also begun a reappraisal of our member categories. The new system is already in place here on the web site, so please take a moment to look at your listing in the online member directory and get back to us with any comments and suggestions.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Westport is the site of a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society's campaign against breast cancer. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a 5-mile noncompetitive walkathon happening Sunday, October 17 at Sherwood Island State Park, rain or shine.
Individuals of all ages are welcome. Take as long as you need to finish, or walk as far as you are able. Participants are not required to raise a minimum amount, and pledges are made for your participation, not the number of miles you walk. Businesses and organizations can sponsor their own teams of walkers. Even if you can't attend, you can still help by collecting pledges.
Visit the Westport "Making Strides" web site for more information or sign up online to start fundraising right away. It's fast, it's easy, it's fun -- and you're helping the American Cancer Society find a cure for breast cancer.
Seaside Networking Event Draws a Crowd
The weather held out long enough to produce a gorgeous evening for our July 19 Seaside Business After Hours, held outside on the grounds of The Inn at Longshore. The sold-out crowd enjoyed tasty hors d'oeuvres and cool beverages as they networked with members -- and prospective members -- of the four participating chambers. Once again we joined with the Westport/Weston, Darien and Norwalk chambers of commerce to bring you this highly popular event.
Web News: Members Referred Daily
Here's another way the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce web site is helping you do business. It's called Request for Services, and it's all about connecting someone who needs something with the somebody who has what they're looking for.
Every day the Chamber office gets calls from people looking for a florist, or a place to stay, or a restaurant by the water. Contractors, insurance agents, printers, local newspapers, real estate agents -- we field all kinds of requests. Maybe it's an out-of-towner who wants to send a gift basket or a good bottle of wine to a local friend. We're more than happy to refer them to a Chamber member.
And now thanks to the miracle of technology, they can submit their requests online any time of day or night, over the weekend or on a holiday. And you don't have to lift a finger to make it happen -- you just have to be a Chamber member.
