Message From Our Chairman

August has been a relatively uneventful month for many of us. Vacations and not business have been on our minds, as we wrap up loose ends and head toward the end of summer.

We will be visiting Fairfield University during Freshman Orientation on August 31. In the past, the incoming students and parents were very appreciative of our efforts to welcome the class to our wonderful town of Fairfield. It is a good way for the students to familiarize themselves with the chamber, and a good way for us to cement "town and gown" relationships as well.

I would assume that most folks in Fairfield will be happy to send their children to newly constructed schools and not portable classrooms as in the past. Kids returning to class on the grammar, middle and high school levels will find relief in mold-free environments, with state-of-the-art lighting and cutting edge amenities. Both the past and present administrations have worked hard to make this happen and should be commended.

We will have a debate of the candidates for First Selectman on October 27 at the Gaelic American Club on Beach Road in Fairfield at 12:00 noon. E. Penny Hug, the Republican candidate, and the incumbent, Ken Flatto, have agreed to answer questions put to them by moderator and honorary chamber member, Jacky Durrell, so please mark your calendars and plan to be there.

This event, co-sponsored with Fairfield Rotary, always proves to be an informative forum in which the candidates discuss their respective agendas. The cost is $20 per person for the luncheon/debate.

We are looking forward to an exciting fall and holiday season and encourage everyone to get involved in one of the many upcoming events. Please contact myself or Patricia at the Chamber office to obtain additional information regarding participation in chamber activities.

Ted Fitzgerald
Chairman

FYI

Arts & Crafts

The Fairfield Kiwanis Club will be holding their 12th Annual Fall Arts & Crafts Fair on Saturday, September 20, 2003 on the historic Town Hall Green, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..

Additional Office

The Moore Center for Rehabilitation, Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Center with offices in Fairfield and Darien, will be opening a new office in Stamford. According to Richard Preneta, PD, Director of Moore Center's Fairfield office, "the expansion will enable us to provide seemless programs and services for commuting patients, students and business people when they are in the Stamford area."

Child Safety

Boccarossa Insurance and Safelite Auto Glass have partnered to offer a Child Safety Day on September 18. The event will take place at the offices of Boccarossa Insurance located at 1954 Post Road in Fairfield, between Don's Cycle Shop and Mrs. Greens Market.

The event is being held to raise awareness on child safety. The two organizations will be providing child safety kits free to the public. The kits provide parents with a reference point for updated dental, photographic record, DNA and a basic description of each child. The kits can be handed over to authorities in the event a child is missing. Refreshments and snacks will be available for all involved.

Casino Update

A recent conversation with Jeff Benedict, president of the Connecticut Alliance Against Casino Expansion and author of Without Reservation, yielded the following information: The Alliance is busy planning a number of fundraisers to raise money for an outside study regardng the impact of Foxwoods and the Mohegan Sun on Connecticut. Additionally, the Alliance has hired the prestigious Washington law firm of Perkins Coie to "make a comprehensive review of development by Foxwoods, including proposals to widen and expand Route 2."

In an article by Rick Green of The Hartford Courant, "Foxwoods plans to open two championship golf courses next year and recently began construction of a $100 million addition that would add 825 slot machines, plus more parking, restaurants and retail stores." The report goes on to say that this new effort will focus on examining land-use and environmental impacts of Foxwoods' expansion. Dan Baur, a lawyer with Perkins Coie, said "When you are talking about building a highway and changing the way water is delivered, those are big issues." A recent state ruling granted the tribe primary rights to water in the area of the casino, and a major upgrading of Route 2, which connects the casino with I-95, Route 2A and I-395, is awaiting federal action.

And Still Growing...

Definitely a wonderful combination! Now that People's Bank on Black Rock Turnpike, and on the Post Road have come on board as additional locations where Certifichecks Gift Certificates are sold, the Chamber's Gift of Choice Gift Certificate program is really growing! This cooperative effort helped relieve the huge flow of people and purchases that would have normally come through the Chamber office. Each year, sales increase and help keep the money in town!

Fairfield Baseball Caps

Unless you've been out of the country, you would have noticed by now all the publicity regarding the Chamber's new baseball hats. Kudos to Randall Blank, our webmaster, who has a new hobby -- digital picture-taking. Randall's keen eye and sense of aesthetics produced the 3-hat picture featured in the Fairfield Citizen press release some weeks back and on our web site. Randall also photographed Lone Weglarz wearing a white hat, and the t-shirts which were featured in the Minuteman Newspaper article which followed shortly after the first press release.

The hats are $15 each and come in navy with white piping, stonewashed denim with a khaki visor, and white with navy embroidery. The Sherman Green gazebo is pictured on the front, while the back of the hat has the words "Fairfield Conn" across the back opening. They are available at the chamber office.
