President's Message: Celebrate Fairfield
The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Fairfield Office of Community and Economic Development invite you to participate in Celebrate Fairfield on Saturday, September 29, 2001.

Celebrate Fairfield is a one-day event to promote the community of Fairfield. We want to recognize businesses that have been a long-standing part of our community and welcome new businesses to Fairfield.

There will be a small parade and ribbon cutting ceremonies in Fairfield Center and on Black Rock Turnpike to celebrate the revitalization of commerce and economic development in town. Additionally, Black Rock Turnpike will be decorated with new banners made possible through the chamber.

But there is more ... much more. Think of how entertainment by community arts organizations, street performers, horse-drawn carriage tours and double-decker bus rides will create a real sense of celebration!

It's all possible, but not without your help. You can show your support for Fairfield and attract customers to your business by sponsoring an event. Sponsorships range from $150 to $2,500+.

To encourage chamber members to support this event, Big Ideas Productions will provide free design services for on-line coupons on the chamber web site. Visitors to the chamber web site may print out & redeem these coupons for discounts and/or specials during Celebrate Fairfield. The Minuteman Newspaper is also offering discounted rates for chamber members who wish to display an ad in a specially designed paper for the Celebrate Fairfield event.

For more information on all these activities, please call the chamber office at 255-1011. Let's Celebrate Fairfield!

See you around town.

Guest Speaker for Sept. Board Meeting
Paul S. Timpanelli, President/CEO of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, will speak briefly to the issue of a casino in Bridgeport, as well as the economic recovery currently taking place in that city. This presentation is in response to SACIA's July presentation which was not in favor of the casino development. All Fairfield Chamber of Commerce members are welcome, however, due to space constraints, you should call the Fairfield chamber office at 255-1011 and let Linda Matthews know you will be attending.

The meeting starts at 8:00 a.m., September 20th at the Old Town Hall, second floor conference room.

Student Discount Program
Please be reminded that students are returning to school in the coming weeks. Help us to welcome them back to Fairfield by joining the growing list of businesses offering student discounts.

Signs will be posted on the campus of Fairfield and Sacred Heart Universities as well as in restaurant and merchant's windows reminding students to show their I.D. to get a discount.

If you have not been involved with the program before, give us a call and tell us you want to start now. If you need a new poster because yours is faded or has become lost, stop by for your new poster now. If you would like a poster delivered, let us know.

Help us to make this program a success for area retailers while providing a service for local students.

Gift Certificates
The Fairfield Chamber office continues to see an increase of activity in the sale of Gift Certificates!

Now that we are in our third year, many buyers were recipients of certificates themselves, and are coming to us with interest in purchasing the certificates to give to others. Historically, sales increase for the holidays, but second to that, there is a tie for end-of-school year and sports season purchases. Teachers and coaches are the happy recipients of these certificates. Chamber members even purchase certificates for associates or clients.

This program is offered to chamber members, so if you are a business that has interest in participating in the next cycle, please contact the chamber office now. Deadline for our list of participating businesses will be mid-March of 2002.

Note of Thanks
First and foremost, I would like to thank all the members of the Search Committee for the time taken from busy schedules in order to review resumes and interview prospective candidates, which, of course, lead to my selection.

I've got some pretty big shoes to fill. My observations over the past couple of weeks have shown that Bob Bilek has done a heck of a job for the chamber. Organizationally, he is tops; he knows just about everyone in (and out) of town, and his enthusiasm has been infective. It seems everyone knows Bob and Bob knows everyone.

Once I find my way around the office, I will be working closely with the membership committee to find new, active members. Call the office if you think you've found someone who will benefit from a chamber association. We are particularly interested in growing the retail sector, and that will be the focus, however, everyone is welcome, of course. We'll get a package out and follow up with a personal visit, if possible. With your help, we can grow the organization; more members mean more volunteers to promote the town and the businesses located here.

In the meantime, please accept my thanks for your vote of confidence and I look forward to working with all of you to make Fairfield a better place to live and work.

Executive Director

'Artist of the Year' Posters
If you are looking for a unique gift, some artwork for your office wall, or a colorful poster for a child's dorm room, stop by the chamber office and pick up a couple of neat and inexpensive posters. These posters are what remain of our participation in past Festival of the Arts events. They represent many different artistic styles and will suit various aesthetic tastes. At $5/each, they are a real bargain.

Fairfield Design Firm Helps 'Identify' B2B Event
Joseph Stamler, principal of Visual Transformations, was recently chosen by the Bridgeport Regional Business Council to conceive and design a special logo to be identified with an upcoming regional business-to-business expo taking place on November 13 at the new Arena at Harbor Yard. Stamler also serves on the Fairfield Chamber's board of directors and on its marketing committee.

Stamler described the elements he used to arrive at the special logo he designed for this event, entitled "Business By The Yard". "I really enjoyed designing the logo for this event," Stamler said. He began with a silhouette of the building for which the event was named, adapted from an architect's rendering; he added a modified marquee with the name of the expo in lights and the host's trademark "B"; and he then completed the design by adding a cluster of business people silhouetted in front of the building making their way inside.
