With the help of Congressman Christopher Shays and U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman, Fairfield University cut the ribbon on its new eco-friendly Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP) in October. The $9.5 million facility generates power with a natural gas-fired turbine that can handle almost the entire electrical load of the Fairfield University campus. Its waste heat is then recycled for heating and cooling campus buildings. The CHP is one of the more visible pieces of an ongoing "green" initiative at the university.
Fairfield University almunus and trustee Christopher Quick has donated a piece of business history to the university: One of the original horseshoe trading posts from the New York Stock Exchange now stands in the lobby of the Charles F. Dolan School of Business.
The vintage brass and oak trading posts were removed in 1980 and donated to museums and universities, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., Stanford University, and now Fairfield University. Valued at $200,000, the gift is helping to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of a School of Business at Fairfield.

Our congratulations to Becker + Becker Associates for winning the job to fill a tall order: Build a high-rise mixed-use building in downtown New Haven that fits the character of the neighborhood, uses "green" technologies and provides enough commercial, residential and parking space to aid the revitalization of Lower Chapel Street.
Negotiations over the design are still in progress, but the complex is currently envisioned as a 36-story building with nearly 500 housing units, retail space on the ground floor and 600 above-ground parking spaces. The estimated cost is $150 million. According to Business New Haven, it would be the city's largest development project in two decades. The last building to occupy the site was the historic Shartenberg & Robinson Co. department store, which was torn down in the 1960s in a failed bid for urban renewal.

Pequot Remodeling Corp's George Christiansen has been accorded Certified Remodeler status by NARI, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. He is only the second contractor in Connecticut to hold that designation.
"There are still less than 20 contractors in the entire state who have any credentials at all," Christiansen says. "There is absolutely no training necessary to be a contractor here. That is one of the reasons that home improvement contractors are #3 on the Department of Consumer Protection's complaint list." This is his third national certification.
NARI's certification program tests remodelers' knowledge and skills in over 20 areas, including business methods and practices, building codes and construction law, planning and site layout, and all of the trade skills required for remodeling homes. Certified Remodelers are also bound to the NARI Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

Sheila Roy of Cachet is featured in an episode of MSN's online lifestyle series A Big Life With with Sissy Biggers. In "Antiques: How to Spot the Real Deal," Sheila explains the ins and outs of shopping for antiques. What to look for, what makes one old piece of furniture more valuable than another (sometimes it just comes down to what's in style and what isn't), and how high-quality reproductions made 60 or 70 years ago can become antiques in their own right.
