Thirty-seven students from high schools in Bridgeport got a glimpse of Wall Street thanks to Fairfield University. The students, mostly seniors taking investment and finance classes, were invited by Dolan School of Business faculty to learn lessons in the dynamics of trading and the volatility of the stock market in Dolan's high-tech Business Education Simulation & Trading (BEST) classroom.
The state-of-the-art BEST classroom offers students a chance to make simulated real-time transactions, and mirrors what one would encounter working on a stock trading floor. It boasts a streaming ticker, big board showcasing gains and losses, multi-purpose PCs that function as trading terminals and the same software used on Wall Street.
The scene in the classroom was lively. Students sat glued to computers, taking in Reuters News Service stories, making graphs and studying charts to pick stocks. Divided into teams, the students bought stocks and watched the big board.
In celebration of Veteran's Day 2006, Patriot National Bank initiated a patriotic partnership with the Disabled American Veterans Department of Connecticut, a nonprofit organization that provides support to disabled veterans and their families. The launch project brought together local school children and disabled veterans.
Children at participating schools, including Holland Hill School in Fairfield, wrote letters expressing thanks for the service and sacrifice veterans and their families have made. Area teachers used the project as a way to teach their classes about patriotism and the role veterans have played in preserving America's freedom and democratic tradition. Small groups of children representing their schools attended receptions at Patriot branch locations, where they read their letters to disabled veterans and had an opportunity to talk with the veterans. All of the letters have been on display in the bank branches prior to being distributed to veterans at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Rocky Hill.

ConnectiCare is promoting a personal electronic health records service, IHealthRecord, to its members and network of physicians and hospitals. The initiative comes as President Bush and leaders such as Newt Gingrich and Congresswoman Nancy Johnson have called for every American to have an electronic health record by 2010.
Through iHealthRecord, ConnectiCare members can create a comprehensive medical record on a secure website, www.ihealthrecord.org. Multiple records can be created to hold an entire family medical history, including emergency contact numbers, allergies, and prescription information. The electronic records can be shared with any physician, hospital or emergency room.
The iHealthRecord service, sponsored by the nation's top medical associations, offers an inexpensive electronic record that can be transported anywhere over a person's lifespan. The need for portability has grown as more people are "on the move" and seek care with multiple physicians over a lifetime.
