Fairfield University will begin offering a Master of Science degree in Accounting in the summer of 2006. Unlike an MBA with a concentration in accounting, this one-year full-time program stresses the specialized and technical knowledge needed for a career in accounting, and fulfills the 150-credit hour requirement for taking the CPA exam in most states.

For more information, call 203-254-4070 or e-mail gradadmis@mail.fairfield.edu.

Health in a Hurry celebrated its one-year anniversary Oct. 28. The organic-vegetarian eatery marked the occasion with a month-long series of weekly specials and giveaways, and "Sue Cadwell & gang" are already looking forward to their second year of serving healthy food for people on the go.

D'Valda & Sirico Dance Centre has added brand-new music studios and an expanded dance schedule to help parents overwhelmed by their children's after-school activity schedules.

Parents can enroll a child in two programs at one location or two children in different programs at the same time. The extra thirty minutes or hour saved each week commuting between activities adds up to less stress for everyone.

The Centre's music department will offer private instruction in voice and popular instruments taught by experienced, accredited musicians. In addition to private lessons, special coaching sessions will be available for auditions and performances, while the Centre's school talent-show package will include vocal coaching and original choreography.

The Charles F. Dolan School of Business at Fairfield University has been named to The Princeton Review's "Best 237 Business Schools" for 2006, marking the first time that the Dolan School has placed in the prestigious annual publication of graduate business programs.

The Princeton Review conducts a three-year survey cycle, collecting the opinions of graduate students at more than 237 of the best AACSB-accredited MBA programs in the world and gathering statistical information on many more.

The honor of being profiled in The Princeton Review's annual guide is particularly rewarding for the Dolan School since most of the schools listed in the book offer large full-time day programs, whereas the Dolan School's MBA and MS degrees are evening programs with most students attending part-time. Only its One-Year MBA in accounting is a full-time day program.

The Angus Steak House is pleased to introduce a new no-cost "Reward Your Employees" program for local businesses. This program provides local businesses with a certificate for two free lunches to The Angus Steak House each month.

Business owners with 5 or more employees are invited to participate in the program. Contact Robert Wool at robert_em@sbcglobal.net or 203-366-5902.

Suggestions on how to utilize the monthly gift certificates include developing an employee monthly sales contest, rewarding employees who provide outstanding customer service, or honoring employees that exceed employers' expectations.

Participating businesses are asked to include the restaurant's name, The Angus Steak House, in any promotional materials used to advertise this program to employees, including bulletin boards, internal newsletters, company email, and other printed materials.

U.S. News and World Report has published its list of America's Best Health Plans® 2005 as ranked by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Fairfield Chamber member ConnectiCare is ranked number six in the nation and is the only Connecticut health plan in the top ten.

A total of 257 of the nation's commercial health plans were ranked by the NCQA. The rankings were based on a combination of member satisfaction, clinical performance and NCQA Accreditation. ConnectiCare has maintained an Excellent Accreditation Status from the NCQA since this category was established in 1999.

The NCQA also publishes Health Plan Report Cards, and has given ConnectiCare four stars in all categories: Access and Service, Qualified Providers, Staying Healthy, Getting Better and Living with Illness.

Additionally, ConnectiCare ranked number one in Connecticut for all six attributes measured by the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®): Customer Service, Claims Processing, How Well Doctors Communicate, Getting Needed Care, Getting Care Quickly, and Courteous and Helpful Office Staff. CAHPS was developed by the NCQA and is used to identify member-satisfaction improvement opportunities for health plans.

Bravo's new owner, Michael Constand, is a lifelong Fairfield resident with deep roots in the restaurant business. His grandfather Steve Constand once operated a luncheonette in Bridgeport, and today Michael has enlisted parents Bill and Cheryl Constand and his younger brother Chris to turn Bravo into a genuine family operation in the heart of Fairfield Center.

Michael has been in and out of the business for years -- at one time he owned an eatery in South Norwalk -- and he brings on board Brazilian chef Sebastian Almeida, himself a veteran of area restaurants and country clubs, most recently Testo's in Bridgeport.

Befitting a family dining establishment, Bravo has instituted a "kids eat free policy": every day from 5 to 7 pm, children under 10 eat free when accompanied by an adult.

Later in the evening, Bravo's bar caters to an older younger crowd with live music Wednesdays and the occasional Sunday, and a live DJ Thursdays and Fridays after 10 pm.

Whatever age you may be, the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Reservations are recommended: (203) 254-1478. The recently renovated private room upstairs is available for baptismal lunches, bachelor dinners, family gatherings and more.

Hot on the heels of a $30 million renovation, the Westport Inn has been named Official Hotel of the Westport Country Playhouse. The Inn offers a Playhouse Experience package that includes accommodations, tickets for two in house seats and an autographed copy of An American Theater: the Story of the Westport Country Playhouse with foreword by Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman. Prices for the package start at $229.

The Westport Inn has two more new packages on offer: "Love, Connecticut Style" and another centered around the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk. Visit their web site at www.westportinn.com for more information.

David R Leopold of Pillar To Post Professional Home Inspection has been honored with the organization's Pinnacle Award for excellence in operations.

The Ad Works is offering a new service to retailers, hoteliers, restaurateurs and business-to-business professionals: advertising copywriting (and editing) as a standalone service separate from the agency's normal full-service campaign work.

Today's small to medium size retailer and entrepreneur oftentimes needs professional creative help with writing ad copy for various business and corporate projects, according to Dick Commer, creative director of The Ad Works.

Small business operators are now finding it more advantageous to work with a small creative ad group on a project or per job basis, so The Ad Works has taken this current trend one step further to satisfy the needs of retailers and small businesses.

Sabita Holistic Center is now hosting guided meditation workshops on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month, from 7:30 to 9 pm. The workshops are led by Dr. Al Levy, internationally known for his work over the past 30 years in stress reduction, deep relaxation and meditation.

Guided meditation focuses on:

  • Breath awareness to gain control over the body and emotions
  • Focused meditation to quiet the mind so it can obtain maximum function and peace
  • Deep relaxation to encourage the body to let go of stress, tension, anxiety and pain

There is no cost, but donations are welcome. Please reserve your spot, as space is limited. Call 254-2633 for more information.

Two Chamber members were in the news recently when David J. Boczar of MetLife Financial Services presented a $1,000 donation to Operation Hope. David is treasurer of the Easton Exchange Club, a longtime supporter of Operation Hope.

Fairfield University's School of Nursing is creating partnerships with local hospitals and healthcare agencies to provide scholarships for students in the accelerated degree program.

Stamford Hospital, TransCon Builders and White Plains Hospital are providing substantial aid money to degree candidates in exchange for one or more years of service.

The accelerated degree program is an ideal source of new nurses for local facilities because its students are all local residents. The program allows students with a bachelor's degree in another field to earn a Fairfield University bachelor's degree in nursing in 15 months. Since the program is full-time, the students have to leave their existing jobs, which creates a real need for scholarship aid.

Meanwhile, the School of Engineering is now offering a four-course concentration in Automated Manufacturing Engineering (AME) as part of the Mechanical Engineering program. The AME concentration, which leads to a certificate, melds the disciplines of mechanical, electrical, and automation engineering to create an "efficient" manufacturing environment.

For more information about the AME program, contact Dr. Paul Botosani at 254-4000, ext. 4147, or e-mail pbotosani@mail.fairfield.edu.

In other Fairfield Univeristy news, the school is collaborating with Fairfield area merchants to expand its StagCard program outside the university's walls. Students are already comfortable using their university IDs as debit cards around campus, but now they can take them to participating local businesses as well.

Merchants who enroll in the program will rent or purchase an electronic terminal and pay a per-transaction fee negotiated with the program vendor, BbOne. This opens up a pool of student buying power that totalled more than $300,000 last year.

BbOne is offering a discount to Fairfield Chamber members, waiving the terminal rental fee for the first three months. Local businesses looking to join the StagCard network can call the BbOne Merchant Hotline for more information, 1-800-576-9279.

Joseph Stamler of Visual Transformations was profiled by the Fairfield County Business Journal in its Jan. 10 "Profits & Passions" feature. The article focuses on his passion for playing music and how it relates to his work as a graphic designer.

Sacred Heart University students attended the presidential inauguration in Washington D.C. with Professor and Department of History and Political Science Chairman Gary Rose, Ph.D. Dr. Rose is an author and expert in the field of presidential politics.

This is the fifth presidential inauguration trip sponsored by Sacred Heart University. More than 50 students were expected to attend this year.

In the two days leading up to the inauguration, the SHU students toured Washington's monuments by moonlight, heard a lecture on the 2004 election and attended a Middle East foreign policy briefing at the Heritage Foundation.
